Generating Evidence: UX Design and Evaluation in Academic Libraries

Libraries are great at collecting data but, in an age of unprecedented demand for accountability and evidence of benefit, we need to be clever about what data we collect and how it is used. In this workshop, participants will learn about and work with different approaches to evaluation in order to produce that evidence.

The workshop will begin with an overview of UX design principles and different evaluation methods, such as storytelling and visualisation. Evaluation projects exploring library design, use of digital resources, collections and support services will be discussed, along with projects that workshop participants have experienced or are planning.

Most of the workshop will involve hands-on activities. Participants will be provided with a dataset to practice using a data analytics tool and they will also start designing their own evaluation project, working in groups or individually. The workshop will close with a discussion about plans going forward and challenges to address.

Whether you are involved in a project at work or just want to know more about UX design and evaluation, this workshop will be useful for you. Please bring along a laptop if you have access to one.

Associate Professor Gaby Haddow

Gaby Haddow is an Associate Professor in the Libraries, Archives, Records and Information Science area at Curtin University. Her previous professional experience was in an evidence-based nursing centre and an academic library. Gaby was co-editor of the Journal of the Australian Library and Information Association for seven years and has served on two conference committees for IFLA’s Library Theory and Research Section, leading to an IFLA Journal special issue about theory and practice in information literacy. Her research has focussed on the communication of research to practice in LIS, research support in academic libraries and research evaluation.  More recently, she co-edited the book Assessment as Information Practice with colleague Hollie White. Gaby is currently leading a working party to identify research needs relating to public libraries and older adults. A list of her publications is available on Google Scholar.

Planning for Open Educational Resources Advocacy

As open education initiatives continue to gain traction in Australian higher education, the work of advocates has become critical to translate small pockets of good practice into strategically focused, evidence-based activities. This workshop is for staff involved in formal or informal open education advocacy at any level, and especially for those only beginning advocacy work - be it one on one advocacy, or advocacy to groups. It introduces an advocacy planning process, with an emphasis on localising action. Participants will have the opportunity to begin planning, and will have access to a curated collection of supporting open resources after the workshop.
